LINPAC Packaging has been recognised as a company, which takes its environmental credentials seriously, at an awards event last month. We're not talking about the Oscars held in America - but something equally as important in the packaging industry - the Nestle UK Supplier of the Year Awards.
LINPAC Packaging was nominated for the Ethical Responsibility Award.
Back in 2013, LINPAC packaging was first approached by Nestle York to design a new thermoformed tub, with three sections to hold its confectionery. LINPAC obliged, designing a product where both the base and the clip over lid are 100% recyclable and are manufactured using 100% food grade approved recycled PET, with up to 95% recycled content. This product represented a major step change for not only Nestle UK but the Seasonal Christmas UK confectionery market.
Now although LINPAC Packaging didn't win a gong for a Product Innovation Award, it was shortlisted in the Ethical Responsibility Award!
LINPAC was short listed for its new innovative lid sealing technology. Last year, LINPAC produced a patented (GB2478028) lid sealing technology for rigid packaging, where the unique sealant is applied to the tray upper flange to permit sealing to lidding films, instead of the traditional process of PE film lamination to the base of the tray.
The purpose of the Nestle Ethical Responsibility Award is to recognise the supplier that could best show their on-going commitment to responsible sourcing; particularly in relation to the Nestle Supplier Code.
The Nestle judges noted that the ELITE technology produced by LINPAC Packaging resulted in:
* Lower costs of production; lower sealing temperatures result in up to 15% saving in line energy consumption
* Increased production capacity; ELITE has reduced dwell times to increase line output by 10%
* Strongest seal; 60% improvement in seal strength reducing overall waste.
By using the new ELITE technology, the pack is 100% recyclable and is manufactured from 95% post consumer recycled materials controlled through LINPAC's super cleaned process. This results in a 5% reduction in the carbon footprint of a pack compared to PET/PE industry standard tray.
LINPAC Packaging was also short listed with Amcor Packaging and Limagrain Cereals Ingredients, who were the ultimate winners! Although no award was brought back to the office, the judges did praise LINPAC - and recognised that it's a supplier that can best show their ongoing commitment to responsible sourcing.
Amy Bates, Freshware Business Development Manager comments “I’m just thrilled that we made it through to the short list. We’ve only been working with Nestle for a relatively short period of time and when compared with companies that have been working with them for over 70 years, I think we did an amazing job just to get this far! We have some great ongoing projects which will really drive new levels of differentiation for Nestle going forward and with our ongoing commitment to fully recyclable packaging, I’m sure we’ll be in with a good shout next year!”
